چکیده

We study numerically, by means of the pseudospectral time-domain method, the unique features of imaging by a flat lens made of a left-handed metamaterial that possesses the property of negative refraction. We confirm the earlier finding that a left-handed flat lens can provide near-perfect imaging of a point source and a pair of point sources with clear evidence of subwavelength resolution. We illustrate the limitation of the resolution in the time-integrated image due to the presence of surface waves.  2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. Flat lens without optical axis: Theory of imaging.

We derive a general theory for imaging by a flat lens without optical axis. We show that the condition for imaging requires a material having elliptic dispersion relations with negative group refraction. This medium is characterized by two intrinsic parameters sigma and kappa. Imaging can be achieved with both negative and positive wave vector refraction if sigma is a positive constant. The Ves...

The planar perfect lens: physical requirements and possible alternative realizations

Several alternative possibilities of how to create an electromagnetic device being able to reconstruct near-field distribution of a source with sub-wavelength resolution (so-called perfect lens) are considered. It is shown that there is a variety of such means not involving double-negative (left-handed, or Veselago) materials or periodical backward-wave structures. It is demonstrated that devic...

Birefringent left-handed metamaterials and perfect lenses for vectorial fields

We describe the properties of specific non-reflecting birefringent left-handed metamaterials and demonstrate a birefringent perfect lens for vectorial fields. We predict that, in a sharp contrast to the concept of a conventional perfect lens realized at = μ = −1 (where is the dielectric permittivity and μ is the magnetic permeability), the birefringent left-handed slab possesses the property of...

We review the intensively discussed ideas about wave propagation and refraction in media where both electric permittivity and magnetic permeability are negative. The criticism against negative refraction as violating the causality principle is considered. Starting from the initial wave equations, refraction of beams at the boundary of a left-handed medium is analyzed. The physics of a perfect l...

Negative Refraction and Imaging in Photonic Crystals

Negative refraction and left-handed electromagnetism in a photonic crystal are demonstrated in waveguide and free space experiments at microwave frequencies. Precision control to achieve tailor-made refractive indices has been achieved. The negative refraction in these photonic crystals is shown to lead to imaging by a flat lens. We have also developed a generalized theory of flat lens imaging....
